The historic Municipal Theater of Arequipa, Peru, has reopened after an extensive restorationc sponsored by Freeport’s Cerro Verde Association.
The recent event was marked with a symphonic gala attended by Derek Cooke, President-Cerro Verde, and Arequipa Mayor Victor Hugo Rivera.
“Projects such as the restoration of the Municipal Theater are important to preserve and protect – together with local and regional authorities – our culture and heritage, which are part of our identity,” Cooke said. “Therefore, Cerro Verde will continue to be involved in emblematic cultural projects for Arequipa.”
The theater was built in 1940 and the ashlar stone facade is considered a work of art in Arequipa’s architecture. Its restoration represents a significant contribution to the protection of the city’s historical heritage and to the educational and social development of the Arequipa community.
The work took about 200 days and was financed by the Cerro Verde Association, a company nonprofit organization, which contributed about $300,000 to the effort. Rehabilitation of the theater, which experienced significant deterioration over the years, included restoration of various infrastructure facilities and amenities, including carpet and armchairs, bathrooms, the auditorium and mezzanine and improvement of the stage and lighting.
Cooke said the theater restoration reiterates Cerro Verde’s commitment to helping preserve the culture and history of Arequipa and to promoting art and education in the city.
