Freeport-McMoRan and Discovery Education Premiere Haul!

September 22, 2022

If you've wondered what it's like to operate a haul truck, now's your chance to try with Haul! – a new, interactive virtual STEM learning experience being released at 1 p.m. EST today by Discovery Education in partnership with the company.

Designed for students but available to all, Haul! allows students to get behind the wheel of a 2-story tall, loaded haul truck and navigate through a 3D copper mine while discovering how copper ore makes its way through a mine and into products used every day.

The new gamified experience is part of Dig Into Mining – The Story of Copper, an educational program sponsored by Freeport for students grades 6-12 that explores the use of metals such as copper in everyday life. An accompanying educator guide and classroom extensions make it easy for teachers to integrate Haul! into any lesson plan and engage students before, during and after the virtual activity.

"In this new interactive virtual experience created with Discovery Education, students discover first-hand the STEM activities and skills behind this resource powering our world," said Tracy Bame, Director of Corporate Social Responsibility at Freeport-McMoRan in a recent Discovery Education news release. "The gamification of learning engages students in exciting ways, while the accompanying educator resources and activities make it easy for teachers to connect the classroom to the wider world."

The development of Haul! took about a year and was guided with input from Phoenix employees Lia Walker, Manager Innovation-Operational Improvement, David (Bates) Barnes, Superintendent-RAMP, Josh Andres, Chief Innovation Engineer, and Angie Harmon, Regional Manager-Community Development.

Launched in 2014, Dig Into Mining equips educators, students, and families with dynamic digital content – including a virtual field trip and interactive learning tools – designed to give students a front-row seat to nature's geological wonders and inspire further exploration of the world around them.

It also introduces students to careers in mining through the Career Profiles page – featuring video interviews with employees – as well the Dig Into Mining Careers Interactive, an online tool to explore mining careers that match students skills and interests.
