Freeport Again Among Top 50 Workplaces for Indigenous STEM Professionals

May 28, 2026

For the second year in a row, Freeport has been named one of the Top 50 Workplaces for Indigenous STEM Professionals by Winds of Change, the publication of the American Indian Science and Engineering Society.

The annual recognition highlights employers that demonstrate a sustained commitment to recruiting, supporting and engaging Indigenous students and professionals in science, technology, engineering and mathematics careers. It emphasizes organizations that have been evaluated and proven to have meaningful outreach to Indigenous communities, provide long-term support and foster inclusive environments where talent can learn, grow and succeed.

AISES serves as an important resource for advancing STEM education and career opportunities for Indigenous peoples, said Carl Haskie, Lead Native American Affairs Specialist. It also was an invaluable resource to Haskie personally as he sought connections and support while navigating college and entering the workforce — including an internship with Freeport years ago.

“This sort of recognition helps indigenous students and professionals identify companies that take their social responsibility seriously,” Haskie said.

Strong relationships and high standing with organizations like AISES can help Freeport build trust, attract talent and bolster the company’s workforce, said Ondrea Barber, Manager-Global Indigenous Affairs and Human Rights.

“Early engagement with Indigenous students and professionals helps us understand how to be more intentional with our support and develop another pipeline for the future of our workforce,” Barber said. “Freeport understands that greater diversity can bring different perspectives to the table, creating opportunities to consider new ways of working and ultimately strengthening our company and our communities.”

The designation reflects Freeport's longstanding involvement with Native American communities, including those near its operations and communities with cultural ties to the land. Freeport has partnered with AISES since 2021, supporting its efforts to create pathways into STEM careers through conference sponsorship, recruitment initiatives and professional engagement, and that work builds on a broader history of collaboration with tribal communities, with efforts ranging from ethnographic studies to hosting ceremonial agave harvests.
