El Abra Agricultural Fund Helps Chilean Farmers Bring in the Crop
February 3, 2025
Chilean agricultural producers who have benefitted from an El Abra support fund held their first produce fair recently, an event organized by the company.
The farmers come from the province of Alto Loa, and many are from rural indigenous communities. They are involved in different areas of agricultural production, and include fruit and vegetable growers, beekeepers, goat keepers and flower growers. Many of the farmers work in remote areas where growing crops is difficult because of the arid environment.
Those participating in the produce fair – held in Calama – have benefitted from the El Abra Agricultural Fund, a program exclusively supported by the company. It provides financing, training and technical expertise to people and associations in the area’s agricultural industry to improve their use of technology. The fund is managed through La Semilla, a foundation that works with El Abra to provide technical assistance to the participants and manage the account.
“We know that for local agriculturalists it is very difficult to work in such arid conditions that exist in the North of Chile,” said Boris Medina, President-El Abra. “That is why we created the Agricultural Fund that gives them the tools that they need to optimize their productivity using new technologies. This gives small farmers the chance to commercialize products in much better and competitive conditions.”
The Agricultural Fund has helped more than 100 beneficiaries in the last three years with the objective of assisting agricultural communities in developing sustainable businesses, diversifying products and improving local economies.
