College Success Arizona recognizes Mr. Richard C. Adkerson, Vice Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer of Freeport-McMoRan Inc., for his continuous support of education in Arizona, and around the world.

Each year more than 350 Arizona leaders gather at the Arizona Biltmore to honor an Arizona leader for their vision of the future, their service to our community, and their support of education for all students in our state.

This year, College Success Arizona is recognizing Mr. Richard C. Adkerson, Vice Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer of Freeport-McMoRan Inc., for his continuous support of education in Arizona, and around the world.  "In the natural resources workf110202.pngorce alone, the state is facing the loss of a significant number of experienced workers who will retire in the next decade, creating an even wider skills gap in an already limited labor pool.  We must work together to meet the state goal to increase higher education attainment to 60%, or lose out on the full spectrum of economic opportunity our state will have moving forward."

Mr. Adkerson holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Accounting, and a Master of Business Administration, from Mississippi State University. In 2010, he also received an Honorary Doctor of Science degree from Mississippi State, and is a graduate of the Harvard Business School's Advanced Management Program.

Prior to joining Freeport-McMoRan, he was Partner and Managing Director in Arthur Andersen & Co. where he headed the Firm's Worldwide Oil and Gas Industry Practice.

From 1976 to 1978, he was a Professional Accounting Fellow with the Securities and Exchange Commission in Washington, D.C.

Active in our community, Mr. Adkerson is involved with the Arizona Commerce Authority, Greater Phoenix Leadership and the Dean's Council of 100 for Arizona State University's W.P. Carey School of Business. He was Campaign Chair of the Banner MD Anderson Cancer Center's, Cancer Has Met Its Match Campaign in Phoenix, and serves as the Honorary Chair of the Phoenix Zoo's Join the Journey – Share our Pride Campaign , and was named Executive of the Year by W.P. Carey School of Business Dean's Council at Arizona State University in 2011.
